Sound & Vision

Not sure you know everything about HD? Read this story to get the full picture

High Definition TV explained

The step up from analogue to HD TV is not unlike the move from large brick-like mobile phones to sleek, modern forms. Let's start with the basics…

What is High Definition?

Infinitely better sound and picture – it’s like being at the cinema but with even better sound.

Is it expensive?

In real terms, TVs are currently cheaper than they’ve ever been.

Why do I need to see an image so clearly?

So that you can enjoy a film or TV programme the way the director wanted you to – in crystal-clear sound and pin-sharp vision. And with HD being at the centre of Sony’s latest Handycams, Cyber-shots and a Digital SLR cameras, you can enjoy your own creations in the same professional quality you see on HD TV channels and in the cinema.

Why are HD TVs so big?

A 40in BRAVIA has a smaller footprint than a 19in analogue TV, and you can hang them on the wall or in the fireplace (make sure you put the fire out first, mind). Smaller Sony HD sets start at 20in.

Is it easy to connect an HD TV and get it working?

It’s as simple as pushing a plug into a socket. And if you get Sky HD, then Sky will come and do it all for you.

What’s this I’ve heard about having to buy an HDMI lead?

Yes, you will need to buy one because only you will know which length or specification will be right for your home set-up. Your local Sony Centre retailer will be happy to help – they’re very nice people.

I don’t need an HD TV.

Resistance is futile! You’ll have to get one soon enough, as Sony isn’t making analogue (low definition) TVs any more.

Won’t I need to keep upgrading my new HD TV to keep up with new advances in technology?

HD TV in its present form will be with us for the next 10 years. And by 2012, the analogue signal will be turned off completely, so analogue TVs won’t work any more. You might as well get stuck in now and start enjoying the amazing advantages of HDTV.
